Monument of Our Lady of Fatima

This monument just outside the Colva cemetery was commissioned in the late 60s by Mrs. Leonor de Loyola Furtado e Fernandes to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the apparition of The Blessed Virgin Mary to three children – Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco who had taken their flock of sheep to a place known as the Cova da Iria to graze, just outside the town of Fatima in Portugal.

The monument erected in memory of her husband Adv. Martinho António Fernandes has the statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the pedestal and the three children and a sheep at the base.

The text in Portuguese on the two plaques on the monument reads:

MONUMENTO COMEMORATIVO DO CINQUENTENARIO DAS APARICOES DE NOSSA SENHORA EM FATIMA 1917 – 1967

Monument commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady in Fatima 1917 – 1967

and

OFERECIDO EM MEMORIA DO ADV. MARTINHO ANTÓNIO FERNANDES ADMINISTRATOR DAS COMUNIDADES OF SALCETE NASCO AOS 9-1-1895 E FALECIDO AOS 15-10-1960 POR LEONOR DE LOYOLA FURTADO E FERNANDES

Offered in memory of Adv. Martinho António Fernandes Administrator of the Comunidades of Salcete born on 9-1-1895 and died on 15-10-1960 by Leonor de Loyola Furtado e Fernandes
